The BioSTART program directly addresses key challenges identified in a 2025 biotechnology report (through a collaboration between Endeavor and BioInnovation Greece) by tackling the early stage funding gap, lack of entrepreneurial training, and limited industry-academia collaboration. Through the BioSTART Fellowship, it provides critical non-dilutive funding, enabling early-stage biotech ideas to advance beyond the proof-of-concept stage and attract further investment. The BioSTART Competition cultivates the currently missing entrepreneurial mindset in the Greek academic settings by equipping young scientists with mentorship, business development skills, and industry connections, helping them bridge the gap between academic research and commercialization. By fostering collaboration between academia, industry, and investors, BioSTART strengthens the biotech ecosystem, creating a structured pathway for innovation to drive economic growth and societal impact in Greece. More specifically, BioSTART will be:
Bridging the Gap Between Academia and Industry
Greece produces highly skilled graduates and researchers, particularly in biotechnology, biomedicine, and related STEM fields. However, there is a significant disconnect between academic research, industry applications and commercial offerings
BioSTART creates a structured pathway for students and scientists to translate their innovative research into viable products, fostering a culture of applied science and entrepreneurship.
Addressing Brain Drain and Fostering Talent Retention
Greece faces a longstanding issue of brain drain, with many talented scientists and innovators leaving the country due to limited opportunities.
By offering funding, mentorship, and startup opportunities, BioSTART encourages talented scientists to stay in Greece, contributing to local innovation and reversing brain drain.
Unlocking Untapped Potential in Biotechnology
Greece has a rich foundation in life sciences, a growing biotech ecosystem, and unique natural resources, such as biodiversity and the Mediterranean diet, that can serve as the basis for world-class innovations.
BioSTART highlights these opportunities, promoting the development of startups in biotech, healthcare, and sustainable technologies.
Inspiring a Culture of Entrepreneurship
Greece’s entrepreneurial culture in Biotechnology, while constantly evolving the last few years, is still in its infancy stage, with many young scientists lacking exposure to business development, commercialization, and startup formation.
BioSTART educates, connects and empowers participants with entrepreneurial skills, bridging the gap between science and business.
Building a Supportive Ecosystem
The competition facilitates collaboration between key stakeholders (universities, investors, industry leaders, and policymakers) who can collectively create a supportive ecosystem for innovation.
Driving Economic Growth and Societal Impact
By fostering biotech startups, BioSTART stimulates job creation, attracts investment, and promotes innovations in healthcare, sustainability, and other high-impact sectors.
